Wheaties Becomes the Breakfast of Champions
There was a time when every American kid knew that if they ate their Wheaties and worked hard, maybe one day they could be just like Michael Jordan, or Jackie Joyner or Billie Jean.
Created in 1922, Wheaties cereal was a bit of an accident—a spill of wheat bran mixture onto a hot stove that eventually became The Breakfast of Champions.
In 1934, Wheaties debuted packaging featuring baseball great Lou Gehrig, its first in a long line of boxes celebrating rising superstar athletes—from Olympic medal winners to champions in tennis, baseball, basketball, football and more.
