Advertising Embraces R&B with Billy Davis’s Hire
Advertising music moved from jingles to what were called “song stories” when Advertising Hall of Famer Billy Davis joined McCann in 1968 as music director. Davis had been a co-founder of The Four Tops, co-writer with Motown founder Berry Gordy, Jr., of the hit song “Lonely Teardrops,” and then head of A&R at Chess Records before his move into advertising.
