Nonsmoker Amelia Earhart Endorses Lucky Strike

A true pioneer, a fearless adventurer—and a good sport. Earhart was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She was also the face of Lucky Strike cigarettes—even though she wasn’t a smoker herself.

After Earhart’s historic transatlantic flight in 1928, Lucky Strike ads debuted claiming she smoked the cigarette brand along the way. Her endorsement may seem inexplicable now, but Earhart proved to be a real catch for Lucky Strike. The timing of the cameo may have been an attempt to appeal more to women, as the ads also made sure to mention Earhart’s “slender figure”.
